For example, Denmark allows free rides up to 3.3 m wide and 4.1 m high, which is significantly higher than average. Norway has a free limit of up to 3.25 m width. When a vehicle exceeds the permissible axle load, it can physically damage the road or bridge. That's why authorities strictly control not only the total weight, but also:

Pressure per axle — standard up to 10 t, on collective axles up to 24 t (depending on the spacing)

Total mass by axle groups — front axle, drive axle, semi-trailer axles

Cargo schedule — the load must be distributed so that it does not overload one side or one end of the vehicle

That is why a permit for extraordinary transport is not just a formality — it includes checking the specific technical parameters of the vehicle and cargo combination.

The condition of indivisibility of burden — what does it mean?

An important concept that appears in almost all European regulations for extraordinary transport is indivisibility of cargo (English: indivisible load).

An indivisible burden is considered a burden that cannot be broken down into a smaller number of pieces without disproportionate cost or risk of damage. The content of the license usually includes:

Approved route — precisely defined roads and sections where driving is permitted

Time frame — permitted dates and hours of driving, prohibitions on weekends and holidays

Escort conditions — number and type of escort vehicles, escort position, equipment

Technical parameters — maximum dimensions and masses covered by the permit

Special conditions — standards for marking, markings on the tractor and semi-trailer, speed limits

Each country has its own competent institution that issues permits — from regional authorities in Belgium, to federal offices in Germany, to national agencies like DRSI in Slovenia or NÚSZ in Hungary. For transport across multiple countries, a separate permit for each country separately.

How many permits are needed?

For the transport from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Germany that passes through Croatia, Slovenia and Austria — they are needed four separate licenses: one for each transit country and one for the destination. Each is submitted separately, has its own waiting period and its own conditions. Coordinating all permits at the same time is one of the key values of a professional organizer of extraordinary transport.

What does the process of organizing emergency transport look like?

The organization of extraordinary transport is not at all like a standard logistics process. The time horizon and complexity are significantly greater.

1. Recording of cargo and technical parameters

It all starts with accurate measurements: total length, width, height and weight of the load including the vehicle. Additionally, the position of the center of gravity, axle loads and type of transport combination (tractor + semi-trailer, lowbed, extendable trailer, etc.) are determined.

2. Route planning

Based on technical parameters, a route is planned that respects the limitations of all infrastructure elements: bridges (load capacity and clearance), tunnels (height and width of the upper gauge), viaducts, power lines, traffic signs and traffic flows. You can read more about this in our guide. How to plan an oversized transport route?.

3. Submission of applications for permits

A separate request is submitted for each country on the route. Deadlines vary — from 2–3 business days for some Baltic countries, to 3–4 weeks for Spain and Portugal, to even 2 or more months for extremely heavy and wide transports that require analysis of bridge infrastructure.

4. Escort organization

Depending on the dimensions and route, civilian escort (pilot vehicle) or police escort may be required. Escort must be ordered in good time, as it also needs to be coordinated with the permit and timetable.

5. Execution of transport

Transport takes place in accordance with the permit — within the permitted timeframes, along the approved route, with prescribed escort and marking.

Check if your transport requires a permit

Enter dimensions and relation in Permit calculator — immediately find out what permits you need and how long it takes to obtain them.

      Open calculator →

Who organizes extraordinary transport?

Extraordinary transport is organized by a specialized carrier or forwarder with experience in this field. Not every carrier is equipped or licensed for this type of cargo. The key competencies of a professional organizer are:

Knowledge of regulations in each European country and up-to-date monitoring of changes

Experience in route planning with infrastructure constraints

Network of contacts with competent offices for fast obtaining of permits

Organization of escort vehicles in each transit country

Availability of adequate equipment — low-floor trailers, extendable sets, special tractors

In addition, the organizer assumes responsibility for compliance of the entire transport with local regulations — which is especially important because fines for unauthorized extraordinary transport can be extremely high (in Poland up to PLN 15,000, in the Netherlands the fine starts at EUR 1,000, and in Bulgaria there are no free dimensions without a permit).

What loads do we most often transport?

Oversized transport covers an extremely wide range of cargo.
