Germany and oversized transport permits
When organizing an oversized transport in Germany, it is important to know in advance when the transport requires a permit and which rules apply to the route. Germany has a specific escort system with classified pilot vehicle types (BF2 to BF4), and regulations also differ between federal states.
This guide provides an overview of the key regulations for abnormal transport permit Germany — Sondergenehmigung — to help you plan transport more efficiently and avoid delays, penalties and unnecessary costs.
Free dimensions without permit
In Germany, a special permit is not required as long as the vehicle remains within the standard dimensions listed below. An overhang of up to 1.5 m is permitted with a standard combination.
| Vehicle | Free dimensions | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Truck | 12 m × 2,55 m × 4 m | Axle loads are not exceeded; the load may be divisible. |
| Tractor unit + semi-trailer | 16,5 m × 2,55 m × 4 m – 40 t | Axle loads are not exceeded; the load may be divisible. |
| Truck + trailer | 18,75 m × 2,55 m × 4 m – 40 t | Axle loads are not exceeded; the load may be divisible. |
An overhang of up to 1.5 m is permitted with a standard combination. If the route is shorter than 100 km, an overhang of up to 3 m is allowed. As soon as one of the standard dimensions is exceeded, the appropriate permit is required. The load must be indivisible in accordance with the German Road Traffic Regulations and road transport licensing regulations.

Transport time restrictions
Transport time restrictions in Germany are defined by the specific permit. Transport scheduling must comply with the conditions stated in the issued permit.
- Travel is permitted in accordance with the conditions specified in the permit.
- During transport, a German-speaking person must be present to fulfill the conditions described in the permit (does not apply to permanent permits valid throughout Germany without prior arrangements).
Private escort
Private escort may be mandatory in Germany when the combination exceeds 20.5 m × 3 m × 4 m – 40 t. The final decision is made by the competent authority. The number of escort vehicles ranges from 1 to 5, depending on the permit conditions.
Types of escort vehicles
BF 2
Escort vehicle equipped with yellow warning lights and direct communication equipment, such as CB radio. It is most commonly used for transports taking place outside motorways or for transports with relatively small dimensions on motorways. The BF2 pilot accompanies the transport and remains in constant contact with the driver to inform them about possible obstacles along the route.
BF 3
Pilot vehicle with an illuminated display board that can show three different signs at the rear: warning of danger, no overtaking for all vehicles and no overtaking for trucks. In addition, it is equipped with all necessary equipment to secure the transport during possible stops: warning lights, warning cones, warning flags, as well as measuring equipment for checking the transport and the infrastructure along the route (measuring pole, measuring tape). The vehicle must be operated by an authorized person trained for BF3 escort vehicles. The BF3 pilot acts according to the permit or the driver’s instructions based on the permit and ensures the safety of the journey.
BF 3+
The same vehicle as BF3 escort, with the difference that it can display several different signs on the illuminated display board.
BF 4
Pilot vehicle equipped with an illuminated display board that can show signs in all directions. There are around ten different signs available, similar to BF3+. The vehicle must have the required colors and markings on all sides. It may only be operated by a properly trained person with at least 2 years of experience as a BF3 pilot. Regulations in Germany are not uniform — for example, in Bavaria and Brandenburg permits cover the entire federal state, while in other federal states permits are issued separately for each route.
Police escort
Police escort in Germany depends on the decision of the competent authority and the specific route. The request is generally submitted 2 working days in advance.
- The decision regarding escort is made by the competent authority and depends on the route.
- Application deadline: generally 2 working days.
- Cancellation costs depend on the stage of the order process and how far in advance the escort is cancelled.
- The police have a period of 3 years to issue the invoice for the escort service.
Additional notes
- During transport, the presence of a German-speaking person is mandatory to fulfill the conditions specified in the permit (does not apply to permanent permits valid throughout Germany without prior arrangements).
- Required documents: vehicle registration documents, authorization (power of attorney), and depending on the parameters — an exemption permit according to Section 70 StVZO.
- Police officers often stop drivers and, instead of the permit (Genehmigung), request to see a Section 46 or Section 29 authorization. Drivers who say they do not understand or do not have such a document may give the police grounds for issuing a penalty — it is important to be aware of this practice.
