Complete guide to oversized transport in Italy, including types of permits, Scheda Technica, fixed fees, escorts and practical advice for route planning.

Italy and permits for extraordinary transport

When organizing emergency transport Italy, it is important that you know in advance when the transport enters the permit zone and which rules apply to the route. Italy has a specific permit system that includes permanent permits, one-off permits, and multiple-pass route permits — with a range of mandatory documents and fixed fees.

This guide provides an overview of the key regulations for abnormal transport permit Italy, so you can plan the transport more efficiently and avoid delays, penalties and unnecessary costs.

Free dimensions without permit

In Italy, it is possible to drive up to 44 t without exceeding axle loads, with indivisible and divisible loads. No special permit is required as long as it stays within the dimensions listed below.

Vehicle Free dimensions Note
Truck 12 m × 2,55 m × 4 m Standard transport
Tractor unit + semi-trailer 16.5 m × 2.55 m × 4 m – 44 t Axle pressures are not exceeded; divisible and indivisible burden
Truck + trailer 18.75 m × 2.55 m × 4 m – 44 t Axle pressures are not exceeded; divisible and indivisible burden
⚠️ Important

As soon as you exceed one of the length, width, height or weight limits, you will need the appropriate permit. The waiting period for permits in Italy is 2–4 weeks from the time all the necessary documents are submitted.

Private escort

Civil escort in Italy depends on the dimensions of the transport and the type of road. The final decision on the number of accompanying vehicles rests with the competent office.

  • On the highway: escort is mandatory for transports >3 m wide and >25 m long. Sometimes it may also be required for smaller dimensions, depending on the importance of the route — at the discretion of the office.
  • Off the highway: escort may be mandatory even under 3 m width, depending on location and permit conditions.
  • The number of accompanying vehicles depends on the dimensions and the route — as decided by the office.

Police escort

Police escort as a standard measure is not applicable in Italy. Sometimes, depending on the dimensions of the transport and the route, additional assistance of a highway pilot may be required — at the discretion of the competent office.

Additional notes

  • For a permanent permit in Scheda Technica the maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) can be 39 t (eg 3 × 9 t per axle + 12 t on the fifth point).
  • A permanent permit is issued for a specific route (in both directions) and a specific transport combination.
  • A route permit is issued for a specific one-way route, for a specific combination and a certain number of passes (1 pass is assumed; if more are needed, the number is stated when submitting the application).
  • Driving is mostly possible 24/7, but everything depends on the dimensions and route, according to the decision of the office.
