Luxembourg and oversized transport permits
When organizing oversized transport in Luxembourg, it is important to know in advance that Luxembourg has a detailed permit classification system — separately for standard vehicles, oversized vehicles and mobile cranes, with specific conditions for the transport of construction machinery.
This guide provides an overview of the key regulations for abnormal transport permit Luxembourg, so you can plan the transport more efficiently and avoid delays, penalties and unnecessary costs.
Free dimensions without permit
| Vehicle | Free dimensions | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Truck | 14 m (12 m + 2 m overhang) × 2.55 m × 4 m | Standard transport |
| Tractor unit + semi-trailer | 18.5 m (16.5 m + 2 m overhang) × 2.55 m × 4 m – 44 t | Axle loads must not be exceeded. |
| Truck + trailer | 20.75 m (18.75 m + 2 m overhang) × 2.55 m × 4 m – 44 t | Axle loads must not be exceeded. |
As soon as one of the limits for length, width, height or weight is exceeded, the appropriate permit is required. The processing time for obtaining the permit can take up to 1 month.

Permits – standard vehicles
Category 1
- Truck – up to 14 m (12 m + 2 m overhang) × 3 m × 4.3 m.
- Tractor unit + semi-trailer – up to 20 m (16.5 m + 3.5 m overhang) × 3 m × 4.3 m – 44 t (max. 12 t per axle).
- Truck + trailer – up to 20.75 m (18.75 m + 2 m overhang) × 3 m × 4.3 m – 44 t (max. 12 t per axle).
Exceptions:
- 4-axle truck – max. 39 t gross weight.
- 5-axle truck – max. 50 t gross weight, under the following conditions: axle loads must not exceed 11.5 t, the vehicle must be equipped with an electronic axle load measuring system and have at least 3 hydraulically steered axles. Such a truck may also tow a trailer, but the total weight of the combination must not exceed 50 t.
- Combination with dolly (e.g. timber transport) – max. 25 m (21 m + 4 m) × 2.55 m × 4 m – 44 t.
- Transport of crane ballast – max. 80 t gross weight / max. 12 t per axle.
- Transport of construction machinery – max. 80 t / max. 12 t per axle, provided that the machine weight exceeds 30 t.
Category 2
- Truck – up to 17 m (12 m + 5 m overhang) × 3.5 m × 4.5 m.
- Tractor unit + semi-trailer – up to 21.5 m (16.5 m + 5 m overhang) × 3.5 m × 4.5 m – 80 t (max. 12 t per axle).
- Truck + trailer – up to 20.75 m (18.75 m + 2 m overhang) × 3.5 m × 4.5 m – 80 t (max. 12 t per axle).
Exceptions of Category 2: Same conditions as for Category 1 for 4- and 5-axle trucks. Transport of construction machinery – max. 100 t / max. 12 t per axle, provided that the machine weight exceeds 45 t.
